PROGRAM PRESENTATION

Identity & History

The Postgraduate Program “Surgical Oncology” (MSc in Surgical Oncology) of the School of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has been operating continuously since 2016. It is the result of collaboration between two of the oldest and most distinguished university surgical clinics in Greece: the First Department of Surgery of Hippokrateio General Hospital of Athens and the Second Department of Surgery of Aretaieio University Hospital. The program is fully aligned with the provisions of Law 4957/2022 and the Regulations for Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).

Academic Scope & Structure

The academic field of the MSc Program is Surgical Oncology—a discipline focused on the multifactorial and specialized multidisciplinary approach to oncological diseases, with emphasis on diagnostic evaluation, therapeutic planning, and surgical management.

The program covers the full spectrum of major oncological diseases relevant to surgical practice, including breast cancer, upper gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors, endocrine gland tumors, colorectal and anal cancers, as well as specialized topics such as melanoma, sarcomas, gynecological malignancies, thoracic tumors, and peritoneal carcinomatosis.

In parallel, the curriculum incorporates modern subjects such as the application of artificial intelligence in surgical oncology, principles of radiotherapy, biostatistics, clinical research, and scientific writing, covering the complete continuum from diagnosis and staging to treatment and follow-up of oncological patients.

Educational Philosophy & Teaching Approach

The educational philosophy of the MSc Program combines high-level theoretical training with intensive clinical experience. Postgraduate students actively participate in weekly tumor boards, primarily held across the two affiliated hospital institutions, and observe selected specialized surgical procedures within the framework of the program.

They undertake practical training in departments of Pathological Anatomy, Radiology, and Radiation Oncology, and participate in scientific conferences and educational meetings related to surgical oncology.

In parallel, the program promotes the development of academic writing skills and critical appraisal of scientific literature.

Training is completed with the preparation of an original Master’s thesis, based on the investigation of contemporary research questions and knowledge gaps, under the supervision of a specialized academic advisor.

Duration, Structure & ECTS Credits

The MSc Program in Surgical Oncology has a duration of two (2) academic years and is structured into four (4) semesters of study, which include both theoretical instruction and clinical training.
The total number of credits required for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma (MSc) amounts to one hundred and twenty (120) ECTS credits.
